Parking changes at the Brody School of Medicine

Construction of the long-awaited Center for Medical Education Building at ECU’s Brody School of Medicine has begun. The $265 million project is a vote of support from the state of North Carolina for our mission to expand care to our region. But in the short term, it will disrupt traffic and parking.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience. We want you to be informed and prepared.

Please review this summary of traffic and parking changes. If you have further questions or individual concerns, please call Parking & Transportation at (252) 328-6294, or email parking@ecu.edu.

Changes by parking lot

SM-7 (The Pit), SM-9 (Biotech), SM-11 (Outpatient Clinic lot), and SM-17 (Small lot east of the Brody School building) and SM-22 (a large B3- and B4-permit lot at the Health Sciences Campus Student Center) have closed.

The SM-25 parking lot in front of East Carolina Heart Institute (115 Heart Drive) will be redesigned to accommodate the increased patients at ECHI as follows:

  • 51 pay-by spaces will be converted to A3 spaces.
  • 68 A3-permit spaces will be converted to patient parking spaces.

SM-4, the large B3-permit lot north of North Campus Loop catty-corner from the Brody School building, will become A3-permit parking. SM-5 and SM-6 lots further down the hill will remain B3-permit lots.

New parking

SM-32 – 100 new B3- and B4-permit spaces have been created in a temporary gravel lot created between the ECHI and Family Medicine buildings and intended primarily for medical school staff, students, and some staff of the Family Medicine and East Carolina Heart Institute facilities on either side of it. The area is unlit.

Vehicles parked there at the close of normal business hours should be relocated to lit parking areas before dark.

  • SM-1 (Leo Jenkin Cancer Clinic lot) has an additional 5 ADA spaces.
  • SM-25 (East Carolina Heart Institute) has 12 A3-permit spaces that have been converted to 6 ADA spaces.
  • SM-27 (Family Medicine) has 62 B4-permit spaces that have been converted to patient parking spaces.

Road closure

North Campus Loop has closed to through traffic. Use MacGregor Downs Road.

Other compensatory strategies

University leaders and project managers are asking faculty and staff inside the medical school to do the following to mitigate parking congestion.

  • Continue remote work and online classes where possible.
  • Stagger appointment and class scheduling to flatten peak parking demand.
  • Limit large events on campus where feasible and utilize other campus facilities.

Enforcement

  • ECU has enhanced parking enforcement to ensure fair use of available spaces. A new license plate recognition (LPR) vehicle and parking control officer (PCO) have been added.
  • Illegal parking will not be tolerated and may result in tickets and towing.

East Carolina University will continue to support our valued students, faculty and staff during this time of transformation. Part of that support is continuing to enforce permit parking to ensure fairness – illegal parking will not be tolerated and may result in tickets and towing.

We will update this page as changes occur and new information becomes available. Further questions or individual concerns can be brought to Parking & Transportation, (252) 328-6294, or email parking@ecu.edu.
