Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials Registration
Objectives:
- Describe major features of copyright law as it relates to materials used in medical education.
- Describe how unattributed use of a table / photograph / diagram created by someone else constitutes plagiarism.
- Describe the “fair use” provision of copyright law and name the four factors which, together, provide guidance regarding protected use of copyrighted materials – vs. copyright infringement – in the education setting.
- Determine an appropriate attribution for a photograph or diagram from (1) an article, (2) a textbook, (3) a website.
- Describe how Creative Commons licensing applies to the use of copyrighted material.
- Describe the advantages of an INTRAnet-based curriculum with respect to copyrighted material where access is restricted to authorized users.
