Core Description

The Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) has a Flow Cytometry core facility that is located in the 4th floor. The facility has one benchtop Flow Cytometer (Aurora) from Cytek in a BSL2 environment. It has a highly advanced 5 laser full spectrum analyzer capable of detecting over 60 fluorochromes from one cell. A recent publication (PMID: 32830910 DOI: 10.1002/cyto.a.24213) proved 40 fluorochromes are possible to detect simultaneously. There is also a 12-color cell sorter from Becton Dickinson (Aria Fusion) to isolate/sort specific cell subsets from a complex mixture of cell types. It is capable of simultaneously sorting 4 cell populations in tubes, also possible to sort cells in slides, 96 or 384 well plates. The facility is available to all ECU researchers, operating as a fee-for-service laboratory. Training is available for investigators and their staff from the core director and administrator Dr. Debajit Bhowmick, he is an ISAC certified flow cytometrist. In the last 10 years, he had worked with BD Bioscience, Karolinska Institute, and Netherlands Cancer Institute. The core offers free support on protocol development/modification, experiment design, data analysis, and interpretation.
