What advice would you offer first- and second-year students who are interested in pursuing your specialty?

Get involved in surgical interest groups, spend some time in the OR, find some research projects in surgical areas, and consider summer projects with surgical faculty.

Does research experience need to be in the specialty itself?

I think it’s important to have some sort of research, especially if you are wanting to find a residency at an academic center. It helps if it is in a surgical specialty, but probably not necessary.

What M3/M4 electives would you recommend to a student who is interested in pursuing your specialty?

Find a couple of areas that interest you and do sub-I in those. Spend your ICU time in a surgical ICU.

Does your specialty recommend doing away rotations?

Not necessarily. I think it could help if there is one specific place you are really interested in, otherwise just concentrate on getting a good experience and good letters from your home program.

If your specialty recommends doing away rotations, how many away rotations do you recommend?

One to two max.

If away rotations are necessary, when should they be completed?

As early as possible in the fourth year.

Which month/s are interviews most concentrated?

During the main residency match process, usually October – December.

Does your specialty recommend that all letters of recommendation be written by members of your specialty?

Yes, they should all be from surgeons.

If letters can come from other disciplines, do you have a recommendation as to which disciplines are more highly valued?

N/A

Does the academic rank of the letter writer matter?

It helps to have one letter from some of high rank or who is well known.

How competitive are the residency programs in this specialty?

General Surgery is usually very competitive.  There are rarely unfilled positions and many people will not match and choose to find a preliminary spot with hopes of trying again or finding an open spot during the year.
