Core Description
The Brody School of Medicine’s Mass Spectrometry Core Facilities embraces a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach to providing research faculty, staff and students advanced mass spectrometry services and technologies. Housed in the Brody School of Medicine and under the purview of the Departments of Research and Graduate Studies and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, BSOM’s Mass Spectrometry Core provides numerous levels of service to the scientific community.
BSOM’s Mass Spectrometry Core is currently active in myriad of clinical and foundational science research projects. These projects include quantitative and qualitative -omics type studies — e.g. proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics– identification and quantification of posttranslational protein modifications, and integrative protein structure and dynamics analysis.
BSOM’s Mass Spectrometry Core Facilities are well-equipped to perform sample preparation, advanced mass spectrometry experiments, and data analysis. Staffed with dedicated, full-time personnel, our overarching goal is to provide high quality, rigorous, reproducible, and cost-effective resources in mass spectrometry.
Services offered by BSOM’s Mass Spectrometry Core include the following:
- Experimental design consultation
- Method development and optimization
- Sample preparation and sample analysis
- Data reporting and interpretation
Our Mission
Mission of the Core
- Provide faculty, staff and students in the ECU community access to high-quality, cost-effective resources in mass spectrometry.
- Collaborate with the ECU community to determine how best to address their scientific questions with mass spectrometry
- Encourage the participation of students in mass spectrometry techniques and data analysis through independent study courses or training on faculty/staff research projects

Alignment with ECU’s Mission
The MS Core facilities have a positive impact on discovering new knowledge and transforming health care by providing ECU’s research faculty and staff with technology not readily accessible to them in the region. Access to these technologies increases research quality and rigor and allows for new and innovative studies.
The MS Core facilities contributes to ECU’s educational mission by preparing students in the STEM field with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in a highly competitive and diverse society through hands-on learning experiences.
