Class Communicator
The Class Communicator serves as a vital link between their medical school alumni class and the BSOM Alumni Affairs Office. This volunteer helps keep classmates connected by sharing class updates, milestones, and news throughout the year. They may assist with reunion planning, gather and share life and career updates from classmates, and help promote alumni engagement opportunities. It’s a great way to stay involved, celebrate classmates’ accomplishments, and strengthen the class community.
HOST: Help Our Students Travel
The HOST program creates meaningful connections between current medical students and alumni during one of the most pivotal times in a student’s medical education – the residency interview season.
Through this program, Brody alumni generously volunteer to host students as they travel for interviews, offering not only a place to stay but also a warm welcome, mentorship, and invaluable insights into the residency training experience. Hosts provide guidance on the medical center where the student is interviewing, share their perspectives on the surrounding community, and help reduce the financial stress that can come with travel and lodging.
While many residency interviews may now take place virtually, Brody students are still visiting cities across the country to tour hospitals and clinics, explore neighborhoods, and begin envisioning where they might live and work during their residency years. As such, we are continuing to grow our network of alumni who are willing to serve as a resource—whether by opening their homes, sharing advice, or helping students get a feel for the area.
If you would like to be listed as a resource for students traveling to your area, we invite you to join the HOST program. Your support can make a significant difference in a student’s journey.
Mentorship
I Am First, a new student organization, has been developed on the basis of filling in any gaps in knowledge, resources, and support for first generation medical students at the Brody School of Medicine. Many times, families of first-generation American and first-generation medical students lack experience and insight when it comes to important struggles; such as student finances, managing a higher education workload, family life, etc. This organization works by pairing students to physician-volunteers (like yourself!) and producing a strong mentor-mentee relationship throughout their time at Brody. The time commitment varies according to volunteer eligibility, and you do not have to be a first-generation physician yourself to volunteer.
If you are interested in being an alumni volunteer and participating in this program, please fill out the I Am First interest form. Please include any additional questions or thoughts.
To contact the organization with questions, please email brodyfirst1@gmail.com.
Welcoming the Incoming M1 Class
Your investment in the M1 class is crucial, and we invite you to show your support by welcoming these students with a gift to the Brody Loyalty Fund. Your generosity enables us to welcome the incoming class with an enhanced orientation program designed to prepare and excite them for the journey ahead.
If you have questions or would like to contribute, please contact Grace Tolson with the ECU Health Foundation at TOLSONG15@ECU.EDU.

Preceptorship
Community preceptors are a vital part of the clinical education and training of medical students. Preceptorships provide students with real-world clinical experience and an important insight into providing medical care in a community-based practice. This unique community/academic partnership is integral to Brody School of Medicine’s mission to increase the supply of primary care physicians serving the state, to improve the health and well-being of our region, and to train physicians who will meet the health care needs of the state.
If you are interested in precepting a medical student, please complete the interest form. Additional information can be found at https://medicine.ecu.edu/academicaffairs/preceptors/
