The awards below honor individuals whose work has strengthened their program, advanced biomedical science, and contributed to the academic mission of the Brody School of Medicine.
William R. Valentine, Jr. Memorial Graduate Student Award
This award recognizes a graduate student who demonstrates outstanding overall achievement during their doctoral training. Recipients typically excel in research productivity through peer-reviewed publications, presentations, and abstracts; receive recognition through competitive awards or grants; and make meaningful contributions to teaching or departmental activities.

Berbecker Fellowship
The Berbecker Fellowship honors a graduate student who demonstrates exceptional academic and research accomplishment. Recipients are distinguished by achievements such as competitive grant awards, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and recognition at the regional or national level. Selection also reflects excellence in coursework, creativity, strong initiative, dedication to a career in biomedical research or the sciences, and meaningful service to the department, university, or broader community.

Carol Volkman Awards for Doctoral Students
These awards recognize excellence in research communication at the Brody School of Medicine’s annual Doctoral Student Research Day. One student is honored for the most meritorious oral presentation, and another is recognized for the most meritorious poster presentation. Both awards celebrate students who demonstrate exceptional skill in presenting high-quality biomedical research.
