Nominations
Who is Eligible to be Nominated?
- Medical students who have demonstrated scholastic achievement, demonstrated professionalism, and have shown promise of becoming leaders in the profession
- Physicians (residents or fellows, faculty, and alumni/alumnae) who later in careers have demonstrated such leadership
- Physicians or others who have attained national or international distinction in any line of endeavor related to medicine but are not eligible for election by other means
- Must be elected by unanimous vote of the Board of Directors as honorary members
Chapter Nominations and Elections
- Individual Chapters shall establish procedures to apply the national criteria for nomination of new members
- All members of the Chapter are eligible to vote for nominees
- Self-nomination will not be considered any category of membership
Student Nominations
- One election will take place at the beginning of the M4 year after the completion of M3 clerkships
- Top 1/3* are eligible for nomination
- *Students with professionalism concerns documented by Student Affairs will not be eligible for nomination
- Eligible students will submit curriculum vitae and a personal statement
- The voting members are charged with electing those students that have a variety of dedicated experiences in:
- leadership, service to the school and community, education, humanism and professionalism.
- Up to 20% of the graduating class may be elected
Resident and/or Fellow Nominations
- Must have successfully completed first year of residency or fellowship
- Must have scored at least 50th percentile on Step 3 or equivalent exam
- Must be nominated by program director
- No more than one resident or fellow may be submitted for nomination by the program director for any given program
- No professionalism concerns
- Resident or fellow will provide curriculum vitae and personal statement
- Their election shall be based on continued academic achievement, leadership, professionalism, service, and teaching
- Special emphasis on commitment and excellence in teaching of medical students
- Currently no more than ten resident/fellow members will be elected each year
Faculty Nominations
- Must be Brody School of Medicine faculty
- Do not need an MD but must have a doctoral degree (PhD, PharmD, EdD, DO, or equivalent)
- Faculty who receive no direct monetary compensation from the school of medicine but teach students are eligible
- Must have demonstrated continued academic and professional achievement, leadership, professionalism, service, teaching, research and a commitment to scholarly excellence and medical education
- May be nominated by Chair of the Department, Vice Dean, Executive Dean or Dean of the Medical School
- A maximum of five per year will be elected
Alumni/alumnae Nominations
- Graduates of Brody School of Medicine who were not elected as students, residents, or fellows, but who, after ten years or more following graduation who have excelled on the basis of academic and professional achievement, leadership, professionalism, service, teaching and research
- Alumni may be nominated by current member of AOA
- A maximum of two per year will be elected
